Sunday, February 21

Ok, so, things I will blog about today (I have been saving up quite a list):

* Seeing Adam Buxton doing BUG
* X-fire now counts how long you play Farmville for?!?
* I have a (sort of) new PC

Right, then, item no. 1. I went to see Adam Buxton (from Adam and Joe) doing BUG at the Phoenix Arts on Thursday 11th February. It was brilliant! BUG is a really interesting idea. Basically, it's a night of music videos with talking inbetween. Also, in this instance, it included Adam Buxton singing a song about Sushi. Hooray!

I don't think I'd seen any of the videos he showed. It's hard to pick a favourite. 'Sour' is a cool Japanese one, must have taken incredible organisation to work it out. It's all done with webcams. Neurosonics Audiomedical Labs Inc. is funny - if I had to imagine how that sort of music was made then I might have imagined this..? Probably not, but hey. Spinning heads! Hmm, maybe this one by NASA? It sends shivers down my spine.

The thing that made it particularly hilarious was the YouTube comments. He presented them in a really geeky way. He'd made an image with layers on his Mac and was gradually clicking them so they displayed. Some people are really mental. :)

(I mean the people who left YouTube comments, not Mr Buxton for presenting the comments in this way!)

Hmm, so, item no. 2. I noticed that you can now download a X-Fire toolbar that will keep track of how long you play web games... How many people out there are going to be brave and keep track of the time they spend playing Farmville? (And is it sadder to have spent ages playing that than WoW?!)

And onto item no. 3. Rob has built himself a new PC, so I have inherited his old one. The only bit that's from my old PC is the CD-drive. The only brand new bit is the shiny white case. Oh, and Windows 7, which I have to admit I really like. :)

It's a quad core pentium, all in all much quicker than my old PC, which was driving me mad when I tried to do processor intensive things. I miss my old PC though, I'd become rather attached to it, in the way that I do get attached to PCs and other gadgets.

The big down side to having a new PC is that I have ended up spending hours and hours sorting out my over 9,000 songs to get them to work in iTunes again. I copied my library across, thinking that that would work (it did before), and it almost did. But it couldn't find a few hundred things so I fiddled around and it ended up with thousands of duplicates (shouldn't trust automated processes!). Following that I wiped it and tried making a new library. That almost worked except for now hundreds of MP3s didn't have all their information - the tags were right on the files but it wasn't sucking the names, albums etc into iTunes correctly. In the end I had to re-copy the songs that weren't working from the backup onto my PC and then reimport them into iTunes. Took ages. I was very grumpy by the end of yesterday. But it's working now, I think. I've lost some playlists and stuff but I guess I'll survive...

That's pretty much it for now!

Just to say I finally put a page up on my domain name (how many years did that take?!) - FieryFred.co.uk. Will blog regarding other recent events shortly...

Monday, February 8

Should have blogged before probably, even if just to say I'm not dead (because I'm not - I survived my talk!). Apparently I appeared 'very relaxed', which is remarkable since I was shaking. Maybe I pulled off the Michael J Fox trick of constantly moving to hide it. :)

Lots has happened since I last blogged. Last weekend we went to Fosse Meadows, which was muddy, cold and not terribly exciting. Probably a good place to see birds at a different time of year but the walk itself is not that thrilling.

Had a busy week at work but made it through to Friday... and the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain! Mum and Dad came to visit and we all went to DeMontfort Hall to see them. I think it was a better (more intimate) setting at the Ashby Folk Festival (when we saw them last) but it was cool seeing them in a big sold-out venue. They did quite a few songs I hadn't heard them do before. And a few that I've heard lots of times. They're so talented, at both the ukulele and singing, and so funny. Hooray!

Saturday Mum, Dad and I went to Newarke Houses Museum. It was good (recently redisplayed), but they could have said a bit more about the building itself. The Wygston Chantry House (which forms part of it) is (apparently) the only surviving Elizabethan urban gentry house in Leicestershire. Then we went into St Mary de Castro church. I'd never been in there before. The gentleman on duty there talked to us at some length about it. :)

Sunday we had a dedication service at church (sort of non-Anglican christening) and then Rob, Ali, Mat and I went to Steam Toys in Action. Mum and Dad were doing pop-pop boats there. We looked at lots of things, ate cake, drank tea, and generally had a good time. Hooray!

Mum and Dad went home this morning. They made it, despite the snow. Not that it has settled anyway. Seem chilly but it's not freezing. Ah... winter... ;)

He has a bowler hat, go figure.
