Kept meaning to blog about my holiday in the Lake District - been home a week now so it's hard to remember where we went! But I'll give it a try.
Day 1 (Saturday)
Arrived at about 3.30 and had a look round. We were staying at a very nicely done modern conversion of a barn. Most of the stuff inside it seemed to have come from Ikea! It had three bedrooms downstairs (one with ensuite bathroom) and a bathroom, and upstairs was a lounge/diner/kitchen, all open plan.
We bought emergency supplies in Keswick, and went for a walk along the little river.
Day 2 (Sunday)
I led a walk using a book that was in the barn. (Most walks were led by Matt, who is an expert.) It started at Castlerigg stone circle and went in a big loop ending up back at the circle. When we arrived there were loads of people wandering around, so we didn't look it until we'd done the rest of the walk. It didn't rain that much and we didn't get lost (although I did get slightly confused at one place, I think the footpath was altered slightly from what it said in the book). Part of the walk went up to St John in the Vale, which is a tiny church in the middle of no-where. Can't imagine they get many people on a Sunday...
Day 3 (Monday)
Today we went to Keswick, to the pencil museum. It was perhaps slightly less exciting than I'd hoped, but still an interesting way to spend a bit of time. Plus they gave you a special museum pencil.
After that we walked round Keswick a bit, had tea and yummy things, then sat by Derwent Water in the sunshine.
Day 4 (Tuesday)
Today was the tiring day - we went up Scales Fell. After four of us admitted defeat, Matt continued on up to the top of Blencathra. But we still had a good view from where we got to. Not as good as his though. But we were dying!
Day 5 (Wednesday)
After taking Matt off to the train station (he'd forgotten when the holiday was so had arranged to be at a meeting), we went to Whitehaven in the afternoon. It was lovely and sunny, got a bit sunburnt. The harbour had had a lot done to it recently, things like interesting tables and a viewing point. And there were some silly dogs doing daft things like fetching rocks. Ha.
Day 6 (Thursday)
We went to Ullswater Thursday, and had a trip on an Ullswater 'steamer'. At one point it tipped it down with rain so we ran into the bar/dining area at the bottom of the boat. But it was mainly dry and pretty scenic. After that we climbed up the waterfalls at Aira Force. That was spectacular, better than I thought it would be. I'm glad we went there.
Day 7 (Friday)
Today we went to Coniston and looked round the Ruskin Museum, which was a surprising place. It had all sorts of things in it, including displays about the Bluebird, which famously crashed there. A very interesting place. We drove back over Kirkstone Pass - good views!
Day 8 (Saturday)
Left at about 10 and went home via Tebay services. They weren't as exciting as I thought they might be. Seemed to take forever to get home, which wasn't helped by the route I chose through North-west Leicestershire. Ah well.
I think that's everything. Well, the main things. So I've been back a week now, and there seem to have been plenty of things to do. We did a lot of gardening today, and I finally drove Rob's car. First time I'd driven in ages. It wasn't quite as scary as it might have been. And I think I did alright.
